Student Handbook

Welcome to CANYON VIEW JUNIOR HIGH for the 2005 - 2006 school year!

As a faculty and staff we are pleased you are going to be a member of our outstanding student body. Our school has a long-standing tradition of excellence in academics and citizenship, extra curricular activities, and unselfish service to others. We invite you to join us in our journey and to take pride in yourself, our school, and our community during 2005 – 2006. YOU are our most important concern. Canyon View Administration

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES: Students have the right to a safe learning environment, free from distracting and disruptive influences. Student discipline and responsibility are integral components of a positive learning environment at CVJH. Students have the right to feel welcome and have a safe learning environment at school, free from distracting and disruptive influences. We must all work together to treat everyone in the school community with the respect and dignity we so richly deserve. In order to accomplish these objectives, all students are expected to follow these guidelines:
1. Attend school daily and be on time for all classes.
2. Be prepared for class, complete all homework and hand in assignments on time.
3. Ask for help if you don’t understand something in class.
4. Respect yourself and the rights of others. Never endanger, harass, intimidate, or disturb others.
5. Promote good school, student, teacher, and parent communications.

BECOMING A “NO BACKPACK SCHOOL:” Canyon View Junior High, beginning with the 2005-2006 school year, will be “NO BACKPACK SCHOOL.” Students may carry their back pack to and from school, but during the school day the backpack must remain in their locker.
1. PLAN AHEAD: Take materials for at least two classes to avoid going to your locker between every class.
2. TAKE THE SHORTEST ROUTE TO YOUR LOCKER: Map out the fastest route to your locker, without stopping for long chats with your friends. Walk and talk.
3. USE YOUR OWN LOCKER: Your locker has only enough room for one backpack and “stuff.”
4. KEEP YOUR LOCKER CLEAN AND ORGANIZED: This will help you find things quickly, while keeping your work and papers neat and grade-ready.
5. KEEP YOUR THINGS IN A ZIPPERED POUCH AND ZIPPERED NOTEBOOK
6. STAY ORGANIZED BY CLASS: Staying organized by class in your locker, notebook, and even your bedroom will help you stay on top of all homework, projects, activities, or tests due.
7. HAND IN YOUR WORK ON TIME: You will have a better grade, attitude, and time in school if you do not have to search for your work in the black hole at the bottom of your locker and/or backpack.

ATTENDANCE (District Policy 5156)
The Alpine School Board of Education in accordance with the Utah Compulsory Attendance Law requires parents to have their children, between the ages of 6 and 18 years, attend school every day, in order to receive maximum benefit from their education. Canyon View Junior High is a closed campus. Students are to remain on campus during the entire school day unless properly checked out by a legal guardian or person appointed by the guardian.

EXCUSED ABSENCES:
1. In the event of an illness or other circumstance that might prevent a student from attending class, a parent/guardian must notify the school requesting the absence be excused. This may be done by note or by calling Mrs. Delaney, at 227-2410, within 5 days of the absence or the absence will be considered truancy. Those that are verified will be marked excused. “Excused” absence guidelines, established by Utah State Legislature/Board policy, include:
a. Illness, medical, or dental appointments, (school may require verification).
b. Death and funeral services of family members.
c. Occasional home or personal emergency, verified by parent/guardian.
d. Extreme hardship. Request for extreme hardship excuses are only approved by School administrators.
e. Educational tours, family vacations, school field trips or activities.
HOMEWORK: Parents may call Mrs. Delaney on 3rd day of absence to request homework. Prior to the 3rd day parents are encouraged to contact teachers directly before/after school or through PowerSchool. YOU, the student, are responsible for all make-up work missed as a result of an absence

2. CHECK-IN: Students arriving late, go to the front office to receive a pass to class (excused/unexcused). A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE: Due to excessive lateness to first period, we would like to help you help your student. We know there are valid reasons for being late--illness, doctor/ dentist appointments, and even the occasional bad morning. However, when the lateness is chronic and for no other reason than sleeping late, we have a hard time excusing it time after time after time. It is very disruptive to the class of 30+ students and the teacher who has to interrupt a lesson, acknowledge the student, and basically start the lesson again for his/her benefit day after day. If your student has a valid reason for being late, such as a chronic illness, we will help accommodate his/her needs. Otherwise, we will not excuse more than (3) 1st period tardies per term. Thank you, Mrs. Delaney

3. CHECK OUT PROCEDURE: Check outs will not be taken over the phone for safety reasons. All persons authorized to check a student out of school must be listed on the emergency health record. The student may bring a note from the parent/guardian to the attendance office from the parent the morning of the check out or the parents/guardian must come to the attendance office to sign the student out.

4. TARDY/SLUFF POLICY, 2005 - 2006: There is a 5 minute passing period between each class. Students are expected to be on time, in their seats, prepared and ready to work when the tardy bell rings.

school for any reason are to be made from the office, confirmed by the school secretaries.

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR - The major purposes of our school are accomplished within the classroom. Most students respect the rights of their fellow students and the teacher, but occasionally a student refuses to obey a teacher, refuses to do any work, or upsets class work by disrupting class activities. Such behavior prevents other students from learning and is, therefore, unacceptable. The teacher may call parents, refer the student to the administration, or request a parent/teacher/student/administrator conference. The District Earnest and Persistent Effort Policy will be followed.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS: Substitute teachers are deserving of the same respect as regular classroom teachers. Students are expected to be on their best behavior, as substitute teaching is a difficult task under the best circumstances. Students failing to do so will be referred to the administration.

BOY--GIRL FRIENDSHIPS: Also known as PDA or public display of affection, students are not allowed to hold hands or engage in other inappropriate physical contact anywhere on campus or at any school-sponsored activity.

SPORTSMANSHIP: Throughout the year, CVJH competes against other schools in various activities. Participants and fans (spectators) observe rules of good sportsmanship at all times. CVJH students do not downgrade or belittle our opponents (guests). Instead, we have fun, cheer for our teams, and treat our guests with respect and dignity. Spectators behaving badly- disruptive, embarrassing, or disrespectful to guests, officials, teachers, or administrators will be asked to leave the activity.

AUDITORIUM: The auditorium should be treated like any fine theater, where our students show courtesy at all times. Unnecessary talk, undignified sounds, stomping feet, whistling, booing, or other discourteous acts toward a performer or group will not be tolerated. If this happens, spectators may be asked to leave the activity or the assembly. Food items are not allowed.

NUISANCE ITEMS: Harmful or distracting nuisance items such as squirt guns, rubber bands, spit wads, yo- yo’s, finger boards, water balloons, wheels, fuel lighters, etc. are not allowed at school and will not be returned. BUSES: Bus safety is serious business. All students being transported are under the supervision/authority of the bus driver and must obey his/her instructions immediately and at all times. CVJH students must demonstrate responsible behavior when riding the school bus, so everyone arrives at school and/or home safely. Students who violate the following rules may lose their bus privileges, as riding a bus, is a privilege and not a right!
1. To prevent injury or serious accident:
a. Students must line up properly, staying out of the street and on the pavement as the bus arrives.
b. Enter and load the buses in an orderly manner.

LOCKERS: School lockers are school property. School officials have a responsibility and right to examine the contents of lockers for reasons of health, safety, and security.

your combination to any other student. Friends today may not be friends tomorrow.
2. No objectionable posters, pictures, or sayings may be posted in your locker.

LUNCH BREAK: CVJH is a closed campus: Students must remain on campus during lunch breaks.
1. Unless, students who live close enough to school to eat at home without being late to their next class may qualify for
an “Off Campus Lunch Pass.” See Mrs. Delaney for request forms. The completed form [parental consent], remains
on file with Mrs. Delaney who will also issue the permanent pass. Students must be supervised when eating at home
and have the pass any time they leave campus for lunch.
2. Students remaining on campus to eat may either pay for their food before school (check or cash for a whole month) or
as they choose their lunch (meal to meal). Both breakfast and lunch are served daily.
3. Students are not permitted passed the dark blue line, in halls or classroom areas during lunch, classes are in progress.
During scheduled lunch time, students are welcome to be in the cafeteria, foyer, and courtyard.

CAFETERIA AND LUNCH BREAK: The Cafeteria is and should be a place where you can enjoy a meal with your friends, while you take a moment to relax. Yet, everyone needs to do their part to keep the Cafeteria neat and clean--there are no servants here. Not cleaning your area shows a lack of pride in yourself, your friends, and CVJH--which isn’t really you.
1. Student behavior should be based on courtesy and cleanliness, meaning that all papers, cans, and other trash needs to be thrown away in the appropriate containers.
2. Students are responsible for the condition of the table at which they eat, including outside courtyard.

VENDING MACHINES: Please do not abuse this privilege or the machines. The vending machines are here for your use before/after school, or during lunches, but not between classes as food and drinks are not allowed in the classrooms.
Occasionally, the machines do eat money or forget to completely drop your snack. The school is not given replacement monies, so you or your parents will need to call Hansen Candy, Pepsi, or Coke directly.

“PUT THE SNOW DOWN!” A MATTER OF SAFETY: Throwing snowballs is prohibited anywhere on school grounds, including bus areas, as a safety issue. Therefore, students participating in throwing snowballs may face immediate suspension.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURE GUIDELINES: The following emergency procedures are intended for most emergency situations. If evacuation is necessary the alarm sounds, teachers/students follow the procedure below:
1. Follow the pre-arranged evacuation route to designated outside area listed on the evacuation diagram posted in each room.
2. Students stay with their class, teacher. Roll is taken again; missing students are reported to the administration.
3. All teachers are required to stay with their class. All students must remain with their teacher until they can be released to a previously identified parent/guardian or neighbor. They will be released only after signing the proper form. This will be handled by the secretaries who will have the proper information.

FIRST AID: First Responders at CVJH are only authorized to administer minimal first aid to students injured at school. We are not permitted to change dressings on previous injuries. We cannot administer medication, even Tylenol, without parent consent. A school nurse is available on a limited basis. Students please report to the office when ill, do not stay in the bathroom. The sick room is available until a guardian takes the student home.

FEES & FINES: School fees (UT State Legislature) or fines are received/recorded by Mrs. Lloyd in Financial Office.

FUND RAISING: Student participation in any school-sponsored fund raising activity is strictly voluntary. Students who choose to participate are responsible for the safe return of all monies and/or unsold items.

LOST AND FOUND: Lost and found items are kept in the main office. The secretary will allow students to search for specific lost items upon request. Unclaimed items are held for a semester and then donated to a charity.

MESSAGES AND DELIVERIES: Messages/deliveries must be taken to the main office to avoid interrupting class. Note: The main office receives a lot of balloons, candies and other gifts for students that are celebrating a birthday or other special occasions. We are asking that you not send these distracting items to school, as they are kept in the office until after school.

POWERSCHOOL: is an internet site where students and parents can access information about grades and attendance. Using your internet browser, use the location (URL) http://205.118.15.5/. PowerSchool can also be accessed as a link from our school web site at http://www.cvjh.alpinedistrict.org. Student ID number and password should be kept confidential. Because of the confidential nature of this information, if your student looses or forgets their ID or password, you will need to come into the Counseling Center personally to get that information. We cannot give it out over the phone or by e-mail as they are not secure.
Also, many of our teachers use email as the technology of choice and convenience to contact parents. If your browser is set up to send e-mail, you can automatically send e-mail to teachers by clicking on the teacher name in the current grades and attendance screen. If you do not use your internet browser for e-mail, then hold the cursor on the teacher's name and read the e-mail address on the bar at the bottom of your browser's screen. Any item that is highlighted in blue can be clicked on to bring up attendance, posting of assignments and scores, and test/quiz scores.
